Clearing MRUs

November 23rd, 2007 . by Robert

I know they can be cleared via options, open/save. But, that clears all of them. It would be nice if you could clear only one, and not all; ie. right click the file to be removed, then have an option to “remove from list.” This would be helpful in the event a user has created a new file and it needs to be deleted or removed; ie. misspelled file name, file no longer needed, and so on.

Thanks,

Robert

Development of AZZ Cardfile version 4.0 - bugs fixed so far, improvement requests - part 2

November 23rd, 2007 . by Rytis Zumbakis

Thanks to all beta testers for their generous contribution, there are about 60 small and more significant bugs to fix. Antanas is at about 30 currently.

Some insight on what has been done.

(I will publish only the first name of betatester for privacy reasons)

From Marten:

I have azzcardfile setup for a blind-user in a more friendly way: without custom controls, without extra toolbars etc. When starting it, the focus is placed in the search-field. I am using it as addressbook. When typing a name, that doesn’t exist in the addressbook and pressing arrow down, to land in the list, the list is empty as it must be, because the result-list will be empty. When pressing f6 at this moment, you will get an error.

Another thing:
when opening the addresslist and when searching by ctrl-f in the list and field for a string that does not exist, azzcardfile tells me not, that the string is not found, but says end of searching or so. Maybe it can tell, that it is not found. Also: when pressing ctrl-f to search and than ctrl-v to paste, nothing happens. Ctrl-v is not working here. When pressing the right mouse button, paste is possible, but not with the keyboard-shortcut.
Regards, Marten

All fixed Marten, thank you!

From Nick:

I’m having more problems with this Beta 4 version.
1) I can’t seem to quickly enlarge the text size. Why can’t I hold the mouse button down and use my scroll wheel to enlarge and decrease the font size on my
screen?

Working on this

2) When I highlight text, and then go to the font size, and type “20″ and hit [enter], nothing happens. I must actually scroll down to the font size 20 and
click with my mouse to change the font size. Why can’t I hit the [enter] button to do the same thing?

Fixed

From Steve:

Just noticed another pain with version 4: you have removed the useful superscript and subscript formating. (or perhaps its just hidden)

Fixed

From Pierre:

Hello, Azz Cardfile 3.2 is a great software.

Since I am getting older, my eyes are not as good as they use to be (LOL).

Will version 4 offer the possibility of larger menu icons ?

It would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Pierre

Large Icons - later, perhaps in next update, lots of work and we want to release final bug-free 4.0 as soon as possible. Hope you understand.

From Jason:

A few comments on the beta of AZZ Version 4 beta c, 2007.06.06.

When I have text entered in the top left header filter box and a filtered list is displayed…. and I also have the cursor in the text of the card… and if I then hit the “X” Clear button (to find another card), the cursor ends up in the top left of the first card in the cardfile. By this point I am already entering the new header filter text, and this gets entered by mistake into the text of the first card. Could you have the cursor revert to the filter box when the “X” Clear button is pressed. It is more intuitive.

This version seems to take a very long time to load with a 20+ MB cardfile…. just an observation.

Thanks for the beta version!

All the best,

Jason

Fixed, thanks!

From Steve:

Here is an major interesting bug:

I copied a credit card number that had the last four digits highlighed in yellow background color. (all the numbers were not bold) than I pasted it into another card in the same file. the first 12 digits appeared in bold face and the last four digits appeared not bold ,without the color highlight ,and as superscript raised above the line.

I checked this several times and it does the same thing.

However when I cut and paste into the same card it does it correctly.

—————
WOW
I just tried it again pasting into a different card and it wouldnt paste at all!

than I just did another number with same highlighting and pasted into yet a different card and it did something different. This time it left the first 12 numbers in normal type face and highlited them in green (origonal had no highlighting on those numbers) and the last four numbers were not highlighted( original was highlited in yellow) but increased the size of the font (on the line this time)

After trying this out a bunch of times : It wont paste at all into a card that had no previous highlighting in it. and It will paste into a card that has something already highlighted but it makes the strange variations as described above.

FYI this file was origonally a version 3 that was transfered to version 4.

I have not tried this with a “virgin” version 4.

Hopefully fixed, needs more testing. Steve, thank you very much for detailed description.

From Andrew:

Why does Cardfile Beta version print an extra blank page at the end of every print-out?

Sorry, can’t reproduce, need more detailed step-by-step report.

Development of AZZ Cardfile version 4.0 - bugs fixed so far, improvement requests - part 1

From Jason: I have two more issues to report with the AZZ cardfile Beta 4.0.

If I create a new card, add information to it and BEFORE saving the cardfile, I try and print the selected card, then it gives an “List index out of bounds (2)” error.

If AZZ is already running and I do not notice and try to open it again by clicking on a shortcut to an AZZ cardfile, then sometimes it will try to “import” the file. I usually manage to shut it down before it completes whatever it is doing. The old version used to give a warning that AZZ was already running, and did I want to continue Yes/No?

Both fixed.
——————————————-
From Sanjay:

1. Just as you have a scale in the card portion, similar scale panning the card list, card and task panel would be of great help in keeping the width of respective items at a desired level.

Sorry, that would violate Windows standards.

2. Search through the task panel fails if multiple words are given

Use “word1 word2″ not word1 word2 when searching for a phrase. If searching for card that contains both words, but not necessarily in a phrase, use +word1 +word2.

3. Cutting and pasting within cards sometimes creates problems. I have to use Word to autoformat before pasting on to an AZZ card.

Fixed

——————————————-

From Bill:

Since using MS Vista OS the right click option in AZZ Cardfile program text
area doesn’t work.

Just downloaded 3.3 and still no right click choices appear in text area.

If I use the small copy & paste icons in program toolbar it works fine.

Copying using copy icon in program toolbar, then pasting from right click
menu in other programs works fine.

Prior OSs in windows all worked as expected with right click.

I hope this description of problem is clear enough.

Any suggestions?

Common in many applications on Windows Vista. Working on this.

——————————————-

From Robert:

… once a file is added to the “Recent Files” box, I’ve not been able to
remove it.  Is possible to do this?…

Easy. Two methods:
1. “options | Open and save | Recently used..” reduce to 0, close, start, set the necessary number. All the MRUs cleared.
2. more intelligent: edit file: “C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\azzCardfile\azzCardfile Settings.ini”. [MRU] section. Where “USER” - Windows user name.
In case there will be many such requests, we might include a “clear browsing history” command somewhere.

——————————————-
From Arthur:

When I go to tool/options/List/Fonts/Bold - Apply, it does keep it, when I
open the program again the List is back to normal font and not Bold, why?
What can I do to correct this?

Bug fixed

From Steve:

Hi!

Just wanted to say I love your new beta Cardfile! My tablet PC handwriting works with it for the first time! It crashes a bit, but I keep multiple copies saved. When will the finished release be downloadable?

Around Christmas, hopefully

Don’t forget the “minimize on close” feature, and start with Windows, ok?

Great Product!!!

AZZ Cardfile 4.0 beta - Bug report from TexasT

November 23rd, 2007 . by Rytis Zumbakis

BUG? List pane: copy-paste

I tried to copy-paste an edit onto a list title by copying using Ctrl+C and pasting with Ctrl+V. Pasting with the shortcut didn’t work. I had to use the right-click context menu to paste.

It works as expected when using Rename card and its pop-up window.

When using it on the list itself, by selecting the title and then letting it change so you can edit it right there on the list, that’s when it requires the context menu. Attempting to paste with Ctrl+V will paste it on the card itself instead of on the list.

Can’t reproduce, possibly already fixed.

BUG? Options: Open & Save

Tab: Open & Save

Location of backup copies

Tried to set a subfolder for backups:

My Documents\My azzCardfile Files\BAKs

and then

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\My azzCardfile Files\BAKs

I browsed to it (I had already created it), both from the “My Documents” folder and using the full path, but it wouldn’t accept it: the line remained blank.

Then I tried setting this folder:

My Documents\My azzCardfile BAKs

and then

C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\My azzCardfile BAKs

and that didn’t work either. The field for the backups path remained blank, with the cursor sitting there and blinking, but it changed the default location for all files - not good.

Fixed.

A strange thing happened when I re-started AZZ Cardfile. I had not set it to open the last file used as default, so the empty screen was not the surprise.

However, clicking on the Open file icon showed that first backup folder I had tried to set:

My Documents\My azzCardfile Files\BAKs

What’s going on? When azzCardfile tried to change the default folder to the path shown above, I had clicked on Cancel, and the field for the default location of Cardfiles showed (and still shows) the default folder My azzCardfile Files. So that’s the one I should have seen when I went to open sample.azz.

Fixed.

BUG? Options: View > Card

Options > View > Card

Can’t change the Font and Color; buttons don’t work.

Can’t unselect “Show Grop Header” [Grop = Group]

Fixed.

BUG? Word wrap

I noticed that a closing parenthesis will wrap to the next line on the card by itself, instead of staying with the word preceding it. I assume the same thing will happen with an opening parenthesis and the word that follows it. Both of them need to wrap as one unit.

Example:

(open

instead of

(
open

and

close)

instead of

close
)

Valid in some cases, sometimes not. It is difficult to manipulate the bahavior of rich text viewer WordWrap. Open.

.ini file

Where’s the .ini file located? I couldn’t find it.

According to Vista standards:

C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\azzCardfile

“Program Files” folder can’t be modified after installation, “Documents” is too unsafe.

AZZ’s new look

I love the clean new look! Very nice!

The tabs for groups are a nice addition, too. That will really help with long lists of topics.

The ruler is nice. Will we get to choose the measurement units?

Already done in Options.

Love the Header choices!

Ooooh, it can show non-printing characters! Awesome!

And a toggle switch on the toolbar, too. Alright! ;-)

Export

When exporting, the default folder shown to save the file is “My Documents”, instead of the default folder for AZZ files (My Documents\My azzCardfile Files), which is what I expected to see. This is not a problem, but it might be a good idea to mention this behavior in the final Help file.

Usually, export dir is saved between sessions. Good notice though.

Options: Apply button

It would be a nice touch if the Apply button was dimmed until a change was made, then it became “active” until it was pressed to apply the change, at which point it would dim again. Not critical, just a nice cosmetic change.

Too difficult to implement, Apply button has been removed – lots of headache for little benefit.

Options: group header

It’s nice that the Group Header includes the Group Description, but it would be nicer if there was some kind of separator between the two.

done

Although in a way I like that I can add it if I want it there, or just leave it alone.

Not yet, carried over for future versions.

Options: window close

When closing the Options window, it sends me back to the first card on the list instead of the card I was viewing when I opened Options, which is the behavior I expected.

On the list, bookmarks to be used.

Dear Antanas:

Yesterday I found the page for Beta 4, downloaded it, and I’ve been
playing with it for a few hours. Very nice! You really have a winner
here! ;-)

So far, it’s been stable. However, I did find what might be some bugs.
I’m enclosing an .rtf export of my “Beta4″ group cards so you can take
a look. The possible bugs are followed by some cards with a few
comments and observations. I hope all of this info will be of help to
you.

Is there a page somewhere on your site where one can see a list of
reported bugs and their status? Or a beta-tester forum?

Thanks!

System Info:

Pentium D CPU 2.80Ghz
0.99 GB of RAM
Hard drive: 232 GB, 123 GB free space

Creating Template-cards in AZZ Cardfile

November 16th, 2007 . by Rytis Zumbakis

In answer to Glen Worstell’s comment in this Blog, I thought it will be useful to many other users, as this feature is not well documented in program’s Help (shame on us).

It is easy and useful to create a template card, if you have AZZ Cardfile files like address-book, recipe book, or any other database that use standard fields for each entry.

1. Create a new card and assign it Title __template, (with one or more spaces at the beginning, so that it always sticks at the top of the alphabetical List):

create template card

2. Add all necessary fields to that “template” card:

add fields to template

3. Once you are going to create a new card from template, right click it in list and choose “Duplicate”:

create new card from template

4. Assign a meaningful Title when asked:

assign title to card

Also, there may be useful - a sample .azz file submitted by one of our users. How to create tables and table templates in AZZ Cardfile: http://www.pim-software.com/download/tables.html
