“The Program has Changed, Reinstall” Message
March 3rd, 2009 . by steve.bruceI have fully unistalled and reinstalled/registered the program a few times, but I almost always get this error message when I save files.
I mentioned in an earlier email that after configuring my Options, I saved the azzCardfile Settings.ini file so that I can restore the file when needed for positioning the azz program window on the correct available screen during a terminal server session. ( I have multiple displays and I often close AZZ on a display that is not available in terminal services. )
I don’t know if restoring the saved .ini file is causing the “Reinstall” message or if it is something else. Is there a way to stop this message ?
Thank You very much,
I had the same problem. Then due a separate virus issue I had to format C drive and reinstall the OS. The problem was gone!!:_))
Don’t move the .ini file from …\Application Data\azzCardfile, if you need to copy/save program settings, do it from Tools > Options > Save settings to file.
Don’t touch anything in …\Program Files\azzCardfile
I have the same error except I didn’t do anything funny. Anyone know how to fix this? I am not a computer savvy person.
Hello, I have had the same problem and in my case I moved the “azzCardfile Settings.ini” file to the same directory as the “azzCardfile.exe” is installed. It solved all my problems. I also made an “cardfile data” folder inside the installed directory & used it to store all of the data (*.axx *.azzx) files. As I said before, this worked for me & I have AZZ Cardfile installed on my usb key. Hope this helps.
tools, options, view then i change font and color and hit ok.it changes this list color as it should then when i exit the program and back in to it everything goes back to default, please help
I have found that this problem is replicated in our environment, as our end users in general do not have administrator access on their computers, we install it with an administrator account instead. When the end user tries to change settings, AZZ Cardfile gives this error, prompting a re-installation, which does not solve the problem.
I have found that the program creates a “azzCardfile Settings.ini” file in the user profile of the administrator account used to install the program, instead of saving that file to a location accessible by the end user. I could not find a way to coerce the program into allowing the user to change the settings, even by granting full permission of the “azzCardfile Settings.ini” file above to the user. The path to the settings file doesn’t seem to be stored in the Windows registry either.
This seems to be a pretty big limitation (user must have administrator rights to properly use the application), especially for any locked down computer environment. Is there a way to have the program use a location inside the currently-logged-on user’s profile to store the settings instead of storing it in the installing account’s profile? If not, it is a feature that should probably be added, as it would not only resolve this error, but allow everybody on multiple-user computers to maintain their own unique settings.
Hello:
I’ve been using AZZ Cardfile for a long time, & love it. I have many files, and am registered on Version 4.0: my license file is attached.
I’ve been issued a new PC, and my old one has been taken away; so I’ve installed AZZ on the new one. However, once I create a new file, I get this message:
“Azz program file has changed. Please backup your files and reinstall the application”
I’ve read the blog, and I’ve done the following:
• Copied the ini file into the following folders. There is a default ini file in each too:
o C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Application Data\azzCardfile\azzCardfile Settings.ini
o C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\azzCardfile\azzCardfile Settings.ini (This folder has the encrypted license file.)
o C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\azzCardfile\azzCardfile Settings.ini
o C:\Documents and Settings\smoran\Application Data\azzCardfile\azzCardfile Settings.ini
o C:\Documents and Settings\smoran.APPLICATIONS\Application Data\azzCardfile\azzCardfile Settings.ini (This is the folder set with my “My Documents” in it, my login.)
o C:\Program Files\Seamus\Apps\azzCardfile\azzCardfile Settings.ini (this is where the azz cardfile program lives.)
• I’ve made the Shortcut have the following target: D:\Journal\Reference\azz4.
o This is where all my azz files live: we keep our data on the D drive.
On the old PC, the program and documents were in the same places, and it all worked well.
Thank you very much for any advice,
Seamus
I’m getting the same problem as above, running a user NOT administrator account in Vista with UAC on. Please can this be fixed, if only by being able to specify where azz reads its INI file from? Everything was (of course) OK in XP.
Thanks…
Update:
I’ve moved all my azz files into the azzcardfile folder under My Documents and Settings, etc. on the C drive. I’ve taken out the Target folder reference in the shortcuts to azzcard and removed the open and save folder from the options under tools.
And still I get the “the program has changed, etc.” message.
Sometimes I get it on opening a file. Sometimes I get it on adding a card.
Some of my files are downloaded from the old site. Some of my files I created using azz 3. Some of files I created using azz 4 beta. All of these have been opened and saved by azz 4 paid for. And some are brand new. I don’t see any difference in behavior between them.
Please post something we can do on this! Thank you.
Also a problem for me, and very frustrating. AZZ is installed via Admin account but running under user accounts on a fresh install of XP with minimal other software (office & a very few utilities).
Data lives on a Truecrypt volume, although (like the others) I think the problem is Admin/User.
Paid for copy of AZZ 4.0c (at time of XP reinstall). Never had problems with 3 (which ran under the old website promo license).
Starting to use AZZ for some fairly serious work, so this needs to be fixed.
azzCardfile Settings.in I see
I am DUMBFOUNDED to see that the publisher of this applet is UNABLE to tell the hapless user such as myself that the problem is fixed by simply copying the folder ‘azzcardfile’ from the user profile of the user who installed the app into the ‘application data’ folder of the user.
I can confirm Eric’s advice is right on. The program is hard-coded to access/save settings to:
“%appdata%\azzCardfile\azzCardfile Settings.ini”
This is a user-specific path, but the program makes no attempt to create it (applying default settings) if it is missing. Now that the exact source of the error has been identified, the author should be able to fix it.
Frankly, I wouldn’t hold out much hope for that.
The only response I have seen from the alleged “author” is the suggestion that we uninstall then reinstall the app. It is now abundantly clear that this is a waste of time. My impression is that this “author” didn’t code the pgm atall, but simply put his name on someone else’s work. It’s called PLAGIARISM, and, for obvious reasons, is universally regarded as a BIG NO-NO! I’m quite relieved to have solved 3 of the 5 problems which the AZZ-holes inflicted upon us:
Stupid error msg re ‘backup$reinstall’
Orphaned toolbar
MRU wasn’t saving recently-opened files
This leaves 2 to be-hopefully- someday solved:
Taskbar button remains; doesn’t minimize to tray
as v3 did. Finally, emails to the address containing the word ‘author’ are getting bounced.
Regards to all. I’m glad to have found this resource. Happy new Year!

I can confirm Eric’s advice is right on. The program is hard-coded to access/save settings to:

I bought a utility that minimizes any app window to tray. Works very well. D/L from:
http://www.actualtools.com/download/
good !!!!!
Have to retract my earlier comment re the utility for minimizing to tray. Turns out the pgm asks for permission to run on every startup, and is VERY VERY dense in the area of help file. They’re there, all right, but you have to have a programmer’s knowledge of Windows’API’s in order to use it. Bleah! I PAID GOOD MONEY FOR THIS DAMN THING!
I have multiple displays and I often close AZZ on a display that is not available in terminal services.
