More suggestions for version 4.0

December 30th, 2007 . by Rytis Zumbakis

You probably have it in mind but I would prefer it if the filter would match any individual words in the cardname out of all words entered. At the moment it is half way there in that any complete part of the cardname string is found, but if the cardname is “COMP Vista Photo Gallery Color Profile” then “COM Col” should IMHO (though perhaps optionally) pick it up straight away.

Of course I appreciate that Ctrl+F finds things pretty well anyway!

Also, after using it for several months, I believe that version 4 beta is so much better AND already more stable and reliable than version 3 that you should try to launch it as soon as possible. I am using Vista Home Premium with 2GB of RAM.

Wonderful program - greatly appreciated.

Individual words matching will be implemented in future versions (this operation may slow down cards search in very large files, so it will probable come sswitched-off by default).

When searching, I press normally escape after doing a search, so the focus land in the found card.
When I want to search for the next occurence, with f3, only the current card is searched.
Seems, that f3 will repeat the last search, but onley in the current card.

As you have searched with ctrl-alt-f3 [find in card]. Is it possible, to change f3, so that it will repeat the last search method you have done?
When the last search was with ctrl-f, f3 will repeat this.
When it was ctrl-alt-f3, f3 will repeat this.

Will be fixed in the next version

I had one more “bug” to report. I have a 24MB AZZ file, and when that is saving (as in File >> Save), the “progress meter” doesn’t come up, just the
waiting hourglass. This sometimes makes me think that it has locked up, and is not actually saving the file.

Will be fixed in the next version

Using Azz cardfile for a long time now it’s a great program.

In the beta 4 version, it would be great if you can add to the options the default of the export feature, so I can always export the selected card instead of all cards, now I have to go down the menu and select it manually each time.

Will be fixed in the next version

It sounds like version 4.0 is close to being released but one feature I would love to see is an outline feature.

In outline mode you could enter information at a topic level with the ability to promote/demote and move topics around within the card. You could also hide topics below a specific level.

I use Cardfile when I’m brainstorming new ideas/projects and outliners are great for that.

Tom - outline mode is in plans, but not for version 4.0. We want to finally release it bug free and proceed with further development.

    Rytis,
Would be useful to have file sync. I Have same file name in two loctions which have been added to. Need to merge and update added card data from both files by syncing files. Any chance this will be a future function.

    Thanks
    Nigel

Nigel, the import function works as a merge too in v4.

Open one of the files in program, use menu File > Import, select another version of file and OK.

If the imported file contains card carrying same Title, a dialog will display, asking whether to: Keep most recent/Overwrite/Skip/Add as new card, also a checkbox below, that allows to “Do the same to all duplicate cards“.

Most likely you will choose to Keep the most recent, so make sure all your computers have clock set correctly.

    Hello,

I would love to see a way to allow users to ONLY read a cardfile I created. Eliminating them to be able to change any data on the cardfile, but most importantly disable anyone from being able to save the cardfile to a disk and use as there own.

Any future enhancement planned for this?

.azz data files are like any other document-files on the computer. Once loaded into the parent program (AZZ Cardfile in this case), they can be edited and modified.

There is a workaround, but not 100% proof - press the “Lock cards” button and remove that button in Tools | Options | Toolbars. All the .azz files on that computer will become semi-locked, unless the user finds a way to re-activate the “Lock” button and de-press it.

Other than this, it is virtually impossible to disallow people to replicate and reuse whatever they already see on their monitor screen, by technical means, sorry.

This should be done by legal means instead.

E.g. you can’t use AZZ Cardfile software trial version forever without buying the License ;)

Rytis, do you have any idea when Azz Cardfile 4.0 may be released? I know you were hoping to have the code cleaned and a gold release by the end of 2007, but it’s near the end of May 2008 now, and I’d love to get Azz Cardfile 4.0 (final). But only when it’s ready.

Keep up the great work. This is such a great tool.

Dave, of course it is unfortunate that you and many other Azz Cardfile fans have to wait this long. One of the reasons is that Antanas, the developer, had some health problems and a surgery, other - we really want to eliminate all bugs and semi-bugs… please be patient :)

    Dear Rytis,
AZZ is already a great program!
USEFUL is the word that says all for it.
My suggestion is to have another function to the Navigation Bar that browses the cards you searched along the day; it is an indexing by card use and not by alphabetic order, as it works now. This new indexing way could use the actual Nav bar with an option to change its indexing from alphabetic to “recent used cards”. Another option could be “most used cards”. I hope I got to explain it well.
Our best wishes to Mr. Antanas be in good health. Best wishes to you too.

    version 4 BETA feedback
    Dear Rytis,

in future versions could you install an option to change the vertical tab to a horizontal position somewhere over the filter bar?

for large files or long hours of project work, it becomes uncomfortable and cumbersome to twist your head to read the vertical tabs

I have some other V4 feed back but certainly NO COMPLAINTS. Thank you for a great product.

I’m still using Ver 3.3c. I no longer can add a card without program becoming non-responsive. Have tried coping my data file to another computer using a newly downloaded and installed AZZ Cardfile. Same problem. I guess my datafile must be corrupted? Any suggestions?

  13. comment number 13 by: Rytis Zumbakis

    Chip,

use menu Help | Open sample file. Can you edit it?

Try to move the .azz file in question to My Documents or Documents (Vista)

Try to recall what changes have possibly been made to your operating system, new programs installed etc. - could be some kind of conflict.

Tabbed AZZ cardfiles would be great! Just like tabbed browsing - All files open up as Tabs in the AZZ Cardfile environment. What do you say?

  15. comment number 15 by: Chip Stockard

AZZ Cardfile 3.3c becomes non-responsive when I try to add a new card. At your suggestion I tried moving my .azz file to My Documents, but the problem still persists. No problem editing “sample.azz”, this data file works fine. Although my file only has 954 cards, if I delete about 90% of them, I can then add a new card. I tried copying my .azz data file to a different computer that has AZZ Cardfile. The problem still exists on another machine, but only with my data file. It’s as if my .azz data file is corrupted somehow.

I searched for a program like this to come my way and I found it. AZZ is fantastic for my intended us, which is making calls to clients and writing the progress of the call. One function that I would very much like to see, is an alarm for tasks that need to be carried out by a certain date or time. This could be done via the pop-up menu on the card itself. Of course, please keep it simple and lightweight as it’s fast and I like it. I have a planner software that takes up a lot of resources and I am glad to have found this as the replacement.

I do hope to see this program have the ability to expand on the title itself where I should be able to enter additional data i.e. double clicking on the card title could bring up a screen where a form can be used to enter the details of the client. But then this may make the program complex to handle and I wouldn’t want to see that happen to this fine software. Take care, Mitch

I love the program and am ashamed to say I have been using v3 for quite some time on a “trial” basis. I decided I would check for a new version and pay for it, so I downloaded the Beta_4-c version.

I downloaded the “Diary Cards” file but am unable to copy information from one card, (or “day”), to another within the database. It doesn’t matter if I use ’select all’ or only a portion. I am unable to paste the information into any other card in the database.

If I create a new database it’s fine. Some other databases I downloaded work fine as well.

I did convert it from v3 to v4 but I did that with another database I created and it works fine.

    Any thoughts or ideas?

I have tried exporting the database and importing it again. No good.
